Why James Hardie Trim — Not a Cedar Repaint
The cedar had reached the end of its maintenance cycle. Repainting would have bought two years. Here's what the permanent fix looked like.
Cedar fascia on a steep gable in Vancouver's wet climate has a predictable lifespan. The paint fails first — usually within five to seven years without maintenance — and once water gets behind the film, the wood follows. On this Kitsilano home, the gable fascia had reached that point: paint peeling, wood grey and soft at the edges, trim pulling away at the joints.
Repainting wasn't the answer. The substrate had already absorbed moisture and repainting over compromised wood means doing the same job again in two years. Hardie trim board is the correct replacement material: it doesn't absorb moisture, holds paint significantly longer than wood, and once it's properly installed and sealed, it doesn't ask for attention. The access challenge — working at height through a neighbouring property — was a logistics problem, not a reason to do the job halfway.
