James Hardie Artisan — New Laneway House, Fairview, Vancouver

This Fairview laneway house was built new — no existing siding to match, no constraints from what was there before. The design called for a clean vertical profile in a single colour across the full envelope. Three weeks on site, James Hardie Artisan installed vertically throughout.

Artisan is Hardie's thicker plank — more shadow line, more depth per board. Installed vertically, it reads modern without announcing itself. The colour ties the building into the metal gate and fence panel system the owner specified for the lane-facing entry. Everything in the same register.

Why Hardie Artisan — Vertical Install — on a Laneway House

The building is narrow and tall. The material choice and install direction had to work with that geometry, not fight it.

Laneway houses in Vancouver have a specific problem: the lot is deep and narrow, the building goes up instead of out, and the lane-facing elevation gets scrutinized from ten feet away. Horizontal siding on a tall, narrow structure can look crowded. Vertical boards extend the eye upward and give the building the proportion it needs.
Hardie Artisan adds shadow depth that thinner boards don't deliver — each plank has a heavier profile, so the vertical lines read with intention rather than looking like a budget choice. On this Fairview build, the result is a laneway house that holds its own next to the main residence and doesn't apologize for the lot it's on.
