The rear wall of this Deep Cove home had deteriorated cedar siding. When we pulled it off, we found what's common on North Shore homes that back onto trees and shade: rot in the substrate underneath — damaged wood and plywood that needed to come out before anything new could go on.
Four days on site. We repaired the framing, installed building wrap, laid new James Hardie Plank, and painted to a custom colour match. The repair blends into the existing dark exterior — you can't tell where the old siding ends and the new begins.
Before, During & After
Deteriorated cedar siding on rear wall — rotted substrate repaired — James Hardie Plank installed and painted to match existing exterior.
The cedar was failing. The substrate needed rebuilding. Here's why Hardie was the right material to close it up with.
In Deep Cove and across the North Shore, rear walls take the worst of it: shade from the trees, moisture that doesn't dry out, and cedar that was installed before anyone was thinking about fiber cement alternatives. When the siding starts going, it usually means the substrate has been wet longer than the surface suggests.
That's what we found here. The repair scope was clear — rebuild what was damaged, wrap it properly, and close it up with a material that won't repeat the problem. Hardie Plank doesn't absorb moisture, doesn't rot, and holds paint long enough that the colour match stays consistent with the rest of the house for years, not months.
