Cedar to James Hardie Plank — Richmond, BC

The ground floor of this Richmond home had aging cedar siding — worn down, soaking up moisture from BC's wet seasons, and pulling attention for the wrong reasons. The owners wanted a permanent fix, not another repaint.

We stripped the cedar down to the sheathing, wrapped the walls with Tyvek HomeWrap, and installed James Hardie Plank in Navajo Beige with Arctic White trim throughout. Two weeks on site. The result: perfectly level planks, properly flashed openings, and a finish that won't ask for attention again.

Why James Hardie Plank for This Richmond Home

Cedar was the original choice. After decades of Lower Mainland winters, it wasn't holding up. Here's what changed.

Weathered cedar siding side wall before replacement — Richmond BC — Pro Max Exteriors

Cedar siding has a natural look — but in Richmond, where the Lower Mainland's rain sits and the ground-level moisture never fully clears, it ages fast. Repainting buys a few years. Caulking joints buys a bit more. At some point the math stops working and a full replacement is the only option that actually closes the loop.
Hardie Plank doesn't rot, doesn't absorb moisture, and holds its factory finish significantly longer than wood. On this home, we matched the horizontal profile of the original cedar — so the new ground floor reads as part of the house, not a patch. The client's words after completion: "the planks are lined perfectly symmetrical."

"It was a great experience working with Max and his team. From the start, he made sure to explain the entire procedure clearly and was patient to help us pick the colour we wanted for James Hardie siding. The team worked on our house for 2 weeks, with Max coming in every few days to ensure everything is on track. Max was also accessible via phone call for any urgent matters after hours. Their work is professional and the planks are lined perfectly symmetrical. Under tight supervision, the job was finished on time, and they even had time to do extra flashings/finishings around our windows and crawl space entries. I would definitely recommend Max for any siding projects."
